What are the ACA subsidy income limits for 2027?

For 2027 Marketplace coverage, you can generally get a premium tax credit if your household income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level — and above 400% you get nothing. Because the enhanced subsidies expired at the end of 2025, the 400% cliff is back for 2027. Subsidies for 2027 coverage use the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines. In the 48 contiguous states and D.C., 400% of poverty is $63,840 for one person, $86,560 for two, $109,280 for three, $132,000 for four, $154,720 for five, and $177,440 for six. The floor (100%) is $15,960 for one person and $33,000 for a family of four; in states that expanded Medicaid, adults under about 138% of poverty are usually steered to Medicaid instead. Within the range, IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26 sets how much of your income you are expected to pay toward the benchmark silver plan in 2027 — from 2.15% at the low end up to 10.22% near the top. Alaska and Hawaii use higher guidelines. For help choosing or enrolling in a plan, call United Enrollment Services, a licensed insurance agency, at 1-866-401-4116.

What it means

  • Income here means modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) for your whole tax household — not just wages.
  • The cliff is all-or-nothing: $1 over 400% of poverty means no premium tax credit for the year.
  • Your expected contribution is a percentage of income, so the subsidy fills the gap between that amount and the benchmark silver premium in your area.
  • These limits are for 2027 coverage. 2026 coverage used the 2025 guidelines ($62,600 for one person at 400%).
  • Alaska and Hawaii have their own, higher poverty guidelines.

Action steps

  1. Add up your expected 2027 MAGI for everyone on your tax return.
  2. Compare it to the table for your household size.
  3. If you are near 400%, look at pre-tax retirement or HSA contributions that lower MAGI.
  4. Enter a realistic estimate on your application during open enrollment, November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.
  5. Call a licensed agent if you are close to a cutoff — small changes can swing your subsidy a lot.

Risks & deadlines

  • Going over 400% at year end means repaying all advance credit in full when you file 2027 taxes.
  • Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027.
  • If Congress restores enhanced subsidies, these limits would change — none has passed as of October 2026.
